Saudi Arabia urges patience with clarity around Hajj pilgrimage as Dubai pledges to back Emirates

Regional governments are rolling out a new round of economic relief packages as the number of Covid-19 in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) reached 52,556 on 31 March 2020.

Case numbers are continuing their upward movement even outside Iran, the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mena, which has more than 44,605 confirmed cases, making up about 85 per cent of the regional total.

In Saudi Arabia, where 1,563 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed to date, Mecca governor Prince Khalid al-Faisal has launched the Barran bi Makkah campaign to support families and small businesses affected by Covid-19 containment measures in the holy city.

Meanwhile, Hajj and Umrah minister Muhammad Salih bin Taher Banten has urged pilgrims and foreign governments to wait for more clarity on the Hajj pilgrimage that is due to take place in late-July.

Major announcements also emerged from the UAE and Kuwait in the past 24 hours.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, said on 31 March that government support would be provided to Emirates Airlines in the form of an equity injection drive.

The unprecedented capital injection from Dubai, which owns Emirates through its sovereign wealth fund Investment Corporation of Dubai, reiterates the airline's commercial and social significance to the local economy.

Plans were also in motion to announce a new set of financial support packages in Kuwait on 31 March.

Earlier today, Kuwait announced soft long-term loans from local banks and loan repayment delays for companies affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

The country’s cabinet has also directed government agencies to pay private sector companies as soon as possible, and waived selected payment obligations for private firms.
