The Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region saw slight month-on-month fall in the value of project contracts awarded in the first month of 2018.
The $11.3bn of project deals signed in January 2018 represented a 3.2 per cent fall in contract awards compared with the $11.7bn of contracts let in December 2017 despite a greater number of deals being signed.
A total of 88 deals were signed in January, compared with 70 in December.
Iraq: January 2018
Iraq recorded the largest value of contracts signed in January, with $3.7bn of deals let and most of these coming from the oil sector.
The biggest contract award made was the $3bn contract signed by the Oil Ministry with a joint venture of China Power Construction Corporation and the US’ Nerco to build a new refinery and petrochemicals complex in Faw, in an effort to raise the country's fuel production.
January contract awards by country
UAE awards: January 2018
The UAE awarded the second-biggest value of deals in January, propelled by the signing of $2.5bn of construction contracts.
The largest deal awarded was in the power sector, with the Dubai Municipality signing a $865m contract with a consortium led by Belgium’s Besix and Switzerland’s Hitachi Zosen Innova to develop Dubai’s first waste-to-energy power project under a build, operate and transfer model.
The waste-to-energy project is planned to have a minimum capacity of 2,000 tonnes a day and produce up to 171MW of electricity.
Saudi Arabia awards: January 2018
Saudi Arabia came in third in the value of deals let, with $1.2bn of contract awards, in a repeat of the muted projects activity seen in December 2017, when $1.3bn of deals were signed.
The largest contract let in January was a $300m deal awarded by Saudi Aramco to China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering to enhance the liquefied petroleum gas pipelines and install new ones at the Juaymah natural gas liquids fractionation plant.
Looking back at the values of contract awards in previous Januarys ranging back to 2014, 2018 recorded the smallest value of deals let, with 2014 seeing the biggest value of contracts let – $22.2bn.
Looking forward, Saudi Arabia’s projects market is set to come back to life this year, with new projects expected to move forward as the government increases capital spending.
